Re:Film was established in Shanghai, China, in 2023 by a collective of seasoned film photography enthusiasts. In the early stages of development, we extensively evaluated a wide array of film duplicating stands and scanners available on the market, yet found none that adequately satisfied our requirements—options were either prohibitively expensive or compromised significantly in image quality. In contrast to conventional film scanners, the rapid advancement of consumer digital cameras has made it increasingly evident that the future of film digitization lies inherently in camera-based duplication solutions. In approximately 2017, we drew substantial inspiration from a camera-based digitizing product featured on a crowdfunding platform. Building upon that foundational concept, we systematically addressed its inherent limitations, incorporated a range of ergonomic and operational enhancements, and ultimately developed the Re:Film duplication system. The result is a solution that significantly elevates both the efficiency and professional rigor of film negative digitization.
